Executing Structured Finance Transactions and Products in Switzerland and abroad taught me to understand risk and gauge the needs of investors. The experience I gained has driven me over the last two decades to focus on and deliver Client Excellence.

I started my career as a Graduate Intern at UBS three decades ago, which gave me tremendous opportunities to learn about the different business units and cultures between Asset Management and Investment Banking. Subsequent to the completion of my internship I was working on credit proposals in London, and it was there involved in the syndication of transactions that formed my interest in working with institutional investors.

Moving to a new leading, but at the time a boutique manager, in Alternative Investments, Partners Group, I decided to keep the client-facing activity and focus on institutional business development.

The many economic cycles and the Great Financial Crisis made it increasingly apparent how large and established institutional investors adapt and the consequences on portfolios. Building up a new investor base for a foreign asset manager taught me that success is only sometimes given; to be entirely successful requires consistency in managing assets through the cycle and taking responsibility for results through proactive communication.

In my roles, later on also as head of the institutional business of a respected UK asset manager in Switzerland, I have always strived to build a bridge between the investor and the asset manager.

At Johann & Graemiger, we are a unique team with complementary skill sets that support our current and future clients. We aim to achieve our targets, but we also believe in mutual respect and know how to manage expectations.

Training as a fund accountant in Luxembourg gave me an operational grounding in the asset management industry. My business development career with high-quality international asset managers has demonstrated the importance and integration of Client, Investment and Operational Excellence.

Shortly after the first UCITs Directive, I landed my first job as an apprentice in fund accounting in Luxembourg. The perspective on the growing fund industry, its technicalities, rules, and players provided a unique basis for my future career.
Moving to J.P. Morgan Investment Management in London, first within the Product Development Team, followed by Relationship Management with Institutional Investors in various European countries, was a huge learning curve in many ways: Corporate Culture, Leadership, Investments, Professionalism and Processes, Ethics.

My time as a Senior Institutional Relationship Manager at some of the most successful asset managers like Capital International, Wellington Management and American Century Investments influenced my professional thinking. I am a strong believer in the positive impact of healthy Corporate Cultures on the firm, its clients and its employees.

Since becoming independent with Johann & Graemiger Partners ten years ago, we have supported over 15 managers in their distribution strategies and activities. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, our beliefs and values stay the same. The learning curve is almost as high as it was many years ago, which is precisely what I enjoy in my work.

Multi-year experience in portfolio and investment management, combined with business development, gives me a vital insight into Investment Excellence and what investors look for in a successful fund manager.

A career path can take many directions, but doing something that motivates and stimulates is essential. For example, I began a career in the offshore oil and gas industry, where I spent several years in Nigeria and the Middle East working for international oil companies.

In late 1997, I decided to venture on a new career path and a different direction, the financial markets and asset management. Since then, I have been privileged to work for several international firms, like Lehman Brothers, Credit Suisse, UBS and Vontobel, in senior roles in portfolio management, investment due diligence and investment research across equities, commodities and economics. In these roles, I gained first-hand knowledge and understanding of what institutional investors look for and require from a fund manager.

My desire to work closer with clients drove me in new directions and brought me to where I am now: business development and relationship management. The multi-faceted experience I have garnered and the desire to explore is core to developing client relationships.

At Johann & Graemiger, I can fulfil my biggest motivation: to meet and work with diverse asset managers and identify, engage, and cultivate new client relationships.
